ABOUT US

My paintings attempt to capture the interaction of the elements and (primarily) the Welsh landscape, creating a unique style that combines colour, contrast and movement. They reflect the changeable weather and the variety of landscapes Wales has to offer, and depict the Brecon Beacons, Pembrokeshire, Snowdonia and the Welsh borders.

 

Working in oils allows me to build up layers of colour, letting some dry and others blend, helping to create the sense of movement and atmosphere. The paintings are distinctive because the horizon is usually far off, giving the sense of unlimited space, and drawing the viewer in. Atmosphere is the key element, and the colours and contrasts transmit a sense of place that is more than just landscape.

Autumn and Winter scenes are the more common subjects. They offer the most dramatic atmosphere, which is why it is my favourite time of year to go walking.

I started painting as a hobby over twenty years  ago, but it has gradually become more of an obsession, as more and more of our precious, irreplaceable landscapes are lost to developers, pollution and climate change.
